I’ve suffered the tortures of the damned

Are we more secure? Businesses spend 20% of IT budgets on security.

October 10th, 2007 ·

CompTIA released a survey (download preview) that states 20% of of corporate I.T. budgets are spent on security.

I find this a bit hard to believe personally but let’s just take it as true. Where does it all go? According to the survey a vast majority (42%) goes to product purchases. This tells me people are still trying to build things themselves and I find this a little troubling, mostly because the survey does not call out services spending (which from my experience is up). They do call out assessments as accounting for 12% of the spending but at least in the preview it does not define what defines an assessment, maybe that is where the services spending is.

Then there is a bit of a shock, over half of all breaches are viruses. Are AV vendors this bad? Are AV writers this good? Then to top it all off AV software is there top thing to purchase next year. So let me get this straight, the AV products have been around forever, still suck, and you are going to pour more money into them? I got an idea, maybe you should take that money and invest in another platform?
