McAfee Acquires ScanAlert, I Go WTF?!?!?

October 31st, 2007 ·

Ok I didn’t see this one coming but when I think about it, it makes some sense. On one side you have Scam ScanAlert, which has a pretty widespread reputation as being a low quality security tool with a high quality marketing plugin attached. The on the other side you have McAfee where all good security tech goes to die. Makes perfect sense that McAfee would just start with crap software to begin with, it is much easier than getting good software and turning it to crap.

Who the hell is making these calls at McAfee? Did they forget that a few years ago they acquired FoundScan, which I have heard is a decent scanner? McAfee paid 51 million dollars for Scam ScanAlert. Are you telling me McAfee could not have take, oh lets say 2 million dollars and make whatever changes they need to make to FoundScan to make it a SaaS offering and use say 25 million to market the crap out of it and steal all of Scam ScanAlerts customers? Hey look McAfee I just saved you 24 million dollars!!

Oh but wait, this would have required some forethought. Silly me, McAfee does not have any forethought. I mean after Qualys has been kicking your ass for years with a SaaS scanner model you would think that maybe you would want to do a little work in building your own SaaS scanner since you already had a scanner that you picked up like 3 years ago. Maybe you want to invest a little in coming up with a PCI offering based on your newly minted SaaS scanner? Maybe you could upsell all those SMBs that use your AV on this new shiny SaaS PCI scanning solution.Oh right sorry, this is McAfee, the place that almost killed PGP, killed Ballista (wait so you have now purchased 3 network VA scanners?!?!?!) and by my reckoning has the crappiest website on the planet. The web is about HTML people not pdf files.
