When you have been around the IT/Security space as long as I have you run into to a lot of whacky people. After a while you begin sorting and classifying them into nice convenient stereotypes. Over the next few weeks I will post my own stereotypes that I have discovered. Hope you get a laugh and figure out where you fit in. The Professional Conclusion is what to do if you are another security professional, the Vendor Conclusion is how you should deal with them if you are trying to sell them something.
“Titan Rain”
These people are generally large (yeah like that kind of large) and boisterous who are totally into security, like all kinds of security. They have at least 5 bug-out-bags strategically placed around there compound, just it case “it” starts to go down. They are generally totally clueless about what it takes to make anything secure or even how to break into anything. First job was a rent-a-cop at the mall. Luckily 99% of the time they have ended up in some “can’t fire me” .gov position or at some rinky dink company run by their sister. Attends every WASC, OWASP, ISSA, and ISACA meeting with a 100 mile radius. Desperately wants to get into a infraguard meeting but is denied cause he can’t pass the background check since he was once caught in a bathroom with this guy. Whenever he encounters any law enforcement types he ask for the latest update on Titan Rain.
Professional Conclusion: Annoying yet funny, you will be cracking jokes at this guys expense for at least a week after every encounter.
Vendor Conclusion: Don’t waste your time unless you are selling guns, ammo, camo or rations. No budget and even if he has it (he doesn’t) he is going to run you around for at least 6 months before bugging out.
